Regional Manufacturing Study to Examine Barriers to Growth and Innovation in the Montachusett Region
October 14, 2013 – Worcester, Massachusetts -- The Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP), RTI, and MassDevelopment announced today their collaboration to conduct a regional manufacturing study in the Montachusett region of north central Massachusetts.
In Massachusetts, manufacturing is the number one contributor to gross state product and accounts for 19.4% of all jobs in the north central region (vs. 10% statewide average). According to Jack Healy, Director of Operations at MassMEP, "The continuing resurgence of the manufacturing sector will depend on a focused and collaborative approach between the private, public, and education stakeholders within regional frameworks."
RTI, a non-profit research institute, will conduct leading edge research in emerging markets and technologies to move high-impact technologies from the bench toward commercial practice.
The Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) and MassDevelopment have pledged significant resources to facilitate outreach to area manufacturers and to connect them to needed services. "With 87% of the Montachusett region's manufacturers employing less than 20 people, there is a real need to support and develop manufacturers that can successfully navigate a global economy," said Marty Jones, MassDevelopment's President and CEO. "We are pleased to have such a respected research institute working with us to provide a manufacturing roadmap that can be applied in the North Central and other regions across the state."
This project will be funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Opportunities Grant (RBOG) and focus on the barriers to growth facing small and medium sized manufacturers.
