New Low-Cost Videophone Brings Expert Healthcare to Consumer Households During
Motion Media Technology Announces CareStation 110
Wilmington, NC (December 18, 2001) - As the holiday season approaches
and the federal government repeats warnings of possible terrorist attacks, the
videoconferencing industry continues to work on ways to apply video technology
to today's health and security challenges. One of the major issues under discussion
is bioterrorism preparedness and response, and how to develop a coordinated
strategy to deal with such threats.
According to Dr. Jay Sanders, international telemedicine expert and Consulting
Medical Director at Motion Media Technology, "During a bioterrorist attack,
front-line healthcare providers and security officials need to be able to instantly
connect with national and regional resources who can provide expertise regarding
particular pathogens. An immediate response is required to rapidly assess and
identify the medical needs of the victims, coordinate the most effective response,
and provide specialized care instructions. One of the best technologies to handle
such a situation is the data-enabled videophone."
Today, Motion Media Technology announced the CareStation 110, the company's
newest videophone designed for remote healthcare. The CareStation 110 is a low-cost,
easy-to-use videophone system that can be put to work anywhere there is a standard
telephone, telephone line, and television. With nearly all of the 105 million
US households containing at least one telephone and one TV, that means telehealth
services can be brought to virtually any home or office.
As Easy to Use as a Regular Phone
The CareStation 110 can be used in a variety of remote care applications, from
emergency services to routine care via community organizations. The unit is
as easy to use as a telephone. A standard television provides large, easy-to-view
images. Simple patient controls feature hands-free speaker-phone operation and
programmable speed dials. Near and far-end camera controls include zoom in and
The CareStation 110 also features automatic data transmission whereby patient
information can be sent to healthcare providers from a wide range of medical
monitors. Two RS-232 data ports allow the videophone to be connected to EKG
monitors, electronic stethoscopes, ECG recorders, and more. This means medical
data can be transmitted at the same time as a video call, allowing immediate
remote assessment of the patient.
According to Dr. Sanders, "Victims of targeted pathogens have characteristic
signs and symptoms that are easily transmitted and identified over a telemedicine
network. The large, clear imagery produced by the CareStation makes it an ideal
tool for emergency medical services."
Price & Availability
The CareStation 110 is priced starting at $979, quantity one, and is available
immediately from Motion Media Technology or through a variety of telehealth
service companies and system integrators. Leasing and payment plans are available.
