Weekend Reading
The employees at Telesian do a lot of reading. In many cases, you'll find our
noses buried in the latest Cold Fusion or XML book. But once in awhile we find
a little time on the weekend to read something outside the scope of business.
This month's selection is a favorite of Mark Worthington, legal counsel for
Telesian (and spouse of Shari Worthington!). When he's not busy running his
law office, he can be found thumbing through the IRS tax code or wading through
a political philosophy text.
The
E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber
Most people believe in the E-Myth - that small businesses are started by entrepreneurs
risking capital to make a profit. They commit to a dream and bravely defy larger-than-life
odds. Unfortunately, the reality is somewhat less than poetic. In most cases,
the "entrepreneur" only exists for a moment. Soon after they launch
their business, the vision is gone, the climb has turned into a terror of heights,
exhaustion is commonplace, and exhilaration is rare.
But all is not lost. Gerber has developed a practical approach to moving through
the stages in the life of a business - from entrepreneurial infancy through
adolescent growing pains to the mature entrepreneurial perspective. He shows
business owners how to focus on what's really important, how to work "on"
your business, not just in it. It's a quick read with a lot of practical advice
for anyone working in the business world.
